Tim Parks was born in 1954 in Manchester. He grew up in London and studied at Cambridge and Harvard. Today, he lives with his Italian wife and three children in Verona.
In Cleaver, the author questions the role of the overpowering father, who, due to the omnipresence of the media, has become exactly what he appears to be: a successful journalist, one who even deconstructs the American president during an interview. But as is so often the case in life, at the peak of his success he starts going downhill fast. The same is true for the journalist Cleaver. His son’s autobiographical book “Under His Shadow” exposes the family deficits, above all, in his father’s behaviour. And when the book is even nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, the stab in his father’s back is completed.
Cleaver flees from the voices of the world to the voices in his head. In a cottage overlooking a remote village in South Tyrol, he is looking for the peace of nature. But that is not enough to soothe his thoughts.
